GDB Lawyers, Mark Dillon and Danielle Morone, Recognized As 2018 Lawyer of the Year Award Recipients

Firm Announcement (April 2018)

In March 2018, Mark Dillon and Danielle Morone, partners of the firm, were honored as recipients of the Daily Journal’s 2018 CLAY (California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year) Awards. In selecting the recipients of the 22nd annual CLAY Awards, which recognize attorneys associated with 20 matters in 15 areas of legal practice, the Daily Journal editors explained that this year’s awards “honor lawyers in California who used their considerable talents to bring about fairness. Yes, fairness for clients but also fairness for society.”

Mark and Danielle received CLAY Awards for the Environment practice area and because of their work on “Net Zero Newhall” – a strategy enabling a large, master-planned community in the County of Los Angeles to achieve net zero greenhouse gases through an innovative and transformative suite of on-site and off-site emissions-reducing measures. Collaborating with their client and co-counsel at Latham & Watkins and Sheppard Mullin (also recipients of 2018 CLAY Awards), Mark and Danielle developed an environmental strategy for greenhouse gases and a fully-protected fish species that culminated in State and local approvals for their client; negotiated a landmark settlement with environmental and tribal interests that have consistently challenged the community’s NEPA and CEQA compliance; and, advocated for decision-making policies that recognize and balance environmental integrity and the critical need to supply housing in California. Other GDB attorneys that provided critical support in furtherance of the Net Zero Newhall initiative include partners David Hubbard and Michael Haberkorn, and senior associate Mike Masterson.
